We had painters working on the outside of our house. They were all Hispanic. They worked hard all day long in brutally hot weather. At one point I had to leave the house to run an errand. As I approached my car, one of the workers approached me and asked me something in Spanish. I could only shrug my shoulders and indicate I didn’t understand him.
So he pulled a phone out of his pocket, typed something into it, and held it close to me. A voice on the phone translated for him and asked me if I could leave a key under the doormat so that he could paint the window frames on the inside.
I know that’s pretty common stuff these days, but how cool is that? Such communication would never have been possible back in my young days. Technology is not all scary and bad. We take it for granted but it has enhanced life in some remarkable ways.
By the way, I answered him by proudly saying “Si”. The only Spanish word I know.
